Connexus conducted market research on supply and demand for small and medium enterprise (SME) finance in West Africa (Senegal, Ivory Coast, and Burkina Faso). Connexus paired international and local finance specialists to interview banks engaged in SME finance and survey 225 SME owners and managers on their needs and interests. The teams each conducted three focus groups of SMEs to collect qualitative detail on what types of financial products, services, and marketing would most appeal to them. The findings were compiled into three country reports and a summary report, which was used by banks to guide their expansion in SME finance. Based on the success of the first project, Connexus was contracted to conduct an institutional diagnostic of Banque Atlantique in Ivory Coast, which offered guidance on how the bank could strengthen its internal systems to reduce risks and improve performance management related to SME finance.
